Plastics in the Ocean Affecting Human Health
We have a big problem in our hands and we can choose to either take action or continue to be the cause of this problem. In This article Gianna Andrews talks about the waste dumped into our oceans and how th e
waste in the ocean affects not only ocean life but ourselves too. First, Gianna talks about the 3 Plastic Islands, The Great Pacific Garbage Patches. These are islands just filled of trash. Next she lists the reasons of trash entering the water. She says "About 20% of the trash comes from ships and platforms that are offshore. The rest sources from litter being blown into the sea, picked up by tides on the beach, or intentional garbage dumping." She then explains the reasons why waste being dumped in our ocean is a really big problem. She explains that when waste gets eaten by ocean animals they can get sick and die. To make it worse if we consume fishes and other ocean animals with waste inside of them we can get sick too. Lastly Andrews talks about solutions to help stop the problem. The reason why I chose this article was because I care for our safety and the animals safety as well. I also have seen animals on the beach tangled up in trash. This article is important because they show us the dangers of our wastes being dumped in the ocean. If we keep throwing our stuff into the ocean not only are the ocean life harmed but so are we. The next step for us is to recognize the issue at hand and just try to be more responsible with our trash. The solution starts with us. |
