Oil Formation Video
1) The process that forms oil requires a lot of time . How long ago did the oil we extract today start
forming?
It started forming 2000 millions of years ago.
2) What was the earth like at this time ?
About 2000 million years ago the earth was a Pangea and that means the continents
did not even exist, a lot of the earth was covered in water .
3) We call it oil now , but what was the slimy black stuff before it became oil?
That was algae which sunk to the bottom of the ocean making a layer of died organic organisms.
4)The video lists several processes or conditions required to change your answer to question 3 into oil . I can think of five - can you get them all?
1. The oil forms between 60 and 120 degrees Celsius
2. When phytoplankton die, they sink to the bottom
3. It heats for about two hundred million years to get oil.
4. They mix with other sediments and break down.
5. Other rock layers form on it, makes pressure and creates heat
5)Besides oil , what other fossil fuel can be formed by this process with only one minor variation?
With just a difference of temperature natural gas can be created by this same process
Bonus : But wait , we call oil a non-renewable resource . If we can just make more oil by this process , why we call it non-renewable?
I think it's a non-renewable resource because you can't reuse it again. Once you've used the
oil, It can't be reused!
