The Great Plankton Race
Notes:
- Phytoplankton us the sun to photosynthesize
- Zooplankton eat phytoplankton
- Plankton are drifters, special adaptions help them stay afloat
- Dinoflagellates have flagella's/long tails to help the float
- Some plankton have vacuoles that keep them buoyant.
- Some plankton are benthic and don't float, they are found on rocks and sediments
- Other plankton will attach to vegetation
- Most of the zooplankton go to deeper water during the day to avoid predators
Adaption Advantage/Reason
cilia To catch prey
bristles Catches prey, helps more
arms + legs To catch prey
tentacles To catch prey/protect
spines Increase drag/protect
shells Protection
transparent Harder for predators to see
Questions:
1. Plankton are single-celled phytoplankton.
2. Plankton eat vegetation in the water. Zooplankton feeds off of phytoplankton.
3. Plankton are important because they are a food source for animals like whales and fish.
4. Plankton usually hang out at the bottom of the sea to avoid being eaten by predators
5. Plankton stay in the photic zone because they just float around
6. 1 way that I think would help plankton reduce sinking is giving them maybe some fins so they could control themselves more and actually swim then just floating and sinking.

Your Planktons Creation:
Name: Sheldon
Reason: I named our plankton Sheldon because I remember that in one episode of SpongeBob, Planktons wife finds out that Planktons nickname is Sheldon and makes fun of him. I just thought It was funny and since our model was actually meant to be plankton we just decided to name him Sheldon

Special Adaptions: I tied a balloon to my planktons back to help keep it buoyant. The balloon was a so called jet pack.
Conclusion:
During this lab I learned that in order to keep the plankton buoyant I needed to level it. Me and my partner had to create that but plankton already have that adaption.
